Night Walk — Jungle After Dark

Strap on a headlamp and enter a living world most travelers never see — the Costa Rica rainforest after sunset.

Overview

About This Experience

When the sun sets in Guanacaste, an entirely different ecosystem awakens. The Night Walk is a 2–3 hour guided experience through primary and secondary rainforest trails where you'll encounter the creatures that only emerge after dark. Led by an expert bilingual naturalist, the walk moves at a leisurely pace suited to all fitness levels. The guide uses a red-filter flashlight technique to illuminate animals without disturbing them. Red-eyed tree frogs, vine snakes, glass frogs, tarantulas, walking-stick insects, sleeping birds, and bats are among the remarkable encounters that make this one of the most memorable experiences in Costa Rica.

Practical tips

Before You Go

Dress for the jungle at night

Long pants and a long-sleeve shirt protect against insects and brush. Bring closed-toe shoes — no flip-flops. Temperatures drop slightly after dark, so a light layer is welcome. Apply insect repellent before departure.

Move slowly, speak softly

Wildlife detection on a night walk depends almost entirely on patience and silence. The guide will signal the group to stop and whisper observations. Loud noises cause animals to flee or hide. Children who can follow quiet instructions get the most out of this experience.

Photography tips

A smartphone with night mode works surprisingly well for photos of stationary animals like frogs and snakes. Avoid using a flash — it disturbs the animals and ruins the experience for the group. A small tripod or a steady hand matters more than an expensive camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Safety is the top priority on every Night Walk. Our guides are trained naturalists with years of experience on these specific trails. They know which animals are safe to approach and maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife. The trails are well-maintained and the group moves at a comfortable pace. Venomous animals are present in Costa Rica, but encounters on guided tours are extremely rare and always managed safely.

The most sought-after sighting is the red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas), but the night walk delivers far more: glass frogs, vine snakes, fer-de-lance, tarantulas, walking-stick insects, cicadas, sleeping toucans, owls, bats catching insects mid-air, and various small mammals. Every walk is unique — no two nights are identical.

The Night Walk runs year-round, but the green season (May–November) is generally the best time for amphibian and reptile activity. Frogs breed during the rainy season and are far more abundant and vocal. The dry season offers drier trails and is more comfortable for those who dislike humidity.

Yes, the Night Walk is suitable for all ages. The terrain is flat and the pace is slow. Children who can walk 2 km and follow quiet instructions love this experience. We recommend ages 5 and up for the best experience, but younger children are welcome with parental supervision.

The tour departs at approximately 6:30 PM, just after sunset. Pickup from your hotel begins 30–45 minutes before departure. The exact pickup time depends on the location of your accommodation. We will confirm the schedule when you book.
