Overview
About This Experience
Río Celeste earns its name from the remarkable turquoise color produced when two streams combine inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, triggering a chemical reaction that scatters light in an otherworldly blue hue. The 8-km round-trip trail winds beneath dense primary rainforest canopy, passing five distinct natural highlights — the Blue Lagoon (Laguna Azul), the boiling springs (Los Borbollones), the viewpoint (El Mirador), the "dyeing point" (Los Teñideros), and finally the 30-meter waterfall itself. Wildlife sightings — including toucans, howler monkeys, and sloths — are common along the trail.

Practical tips
Before You Go
Best time to visit
The dry season (November–April) offers clearer trails and more predictable weather. The park opens at 8 AM; arriving early means fewer visitors on the trail and better wildlife sightings.
No swimming in the blue water
Swimming is strictly prohibited inside the national park at both the waterfall and the Blue Lagoon. The restriction protects the unique chemical and biological processes that create the river's iconic color. There are areas outside the park boundary where swimming is permitted.
Wear the right footwear
The trail has uneven roots and some muddy sections, especially during the green season. Closed-toe shoes or light hiking boots with grip are strongly recommended. Bring insect repellent and a light rain jacket.
