Río Celeste Waterfall — Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Nature Tour

Río Celeste Waterfall

Witness one of Costa Rica's most extraordinary natural phenomena — a river that runs vivid sky-blue through the rainforest.

Overview

About This Experience

Río Celeste earns its name from the remarkable turquoise color produced when two streams combine inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, triggering a chemical reaction that scatters light in an otherworldly blue hue. The 8-km round-trip trail winds beneath dense primary rainforest canopy, passing five distinct natural highlights — the Blue Lagoon (Laguna Azul), the boiling springs (Los Borbollones), the viewpoint (El Mirador), the "dyeing point" (Los Teñideros), and finally the 30-meter waterfall itself. Wildlife sightings — including toucans, howler monkeys, and sloths — are common along the trail.

Practical tips

Before You Go

Best time to visit

The dry season (November–April) offers clearer trails and more predictable weather. The park opens at 8 AM; arriving early means fewer visitors on the trail and better wildlife sightings.

No swimming in the blue water

Swimming is strictly prohibited inside the national park at both the waterfall and the Blue Lagoon. The restriction protects the unique chemical and biological processes that create the river's iconic color. There are areas outside the park boundary where swimming is permitted.

Wear the right footwear

The trail has uneven roots and some muddy sections, especially during the green season. Closed-toe shoes or light hiking boots with grip are strongly recommended. Bring insect repellent and a light rain jacket.

Frequently Asked Questions

The color results from a process called Mie scattering. At the confluence point inside the park, two rivers — Río Buena Vista and Quebrada Agria — mix and trigger a rise in pH that causes suspended particles to scatter short-wavelength (blue) light, producing the vivid turquoise hue. It is a natural phenomenon unique to this park.

The trail inside Tenorio Volcano National Park is approximately 8 km round trip. The hike takes 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace, passing through the Blue Lagoon, Los Borbollones, El Mirador, and Los Teñideros before reaching the 30-meter waterfall.

Swimming is not permitted inside the national park at the waterfall or the Blue Lagoon. The restriction is in place to protect the delicate ecosystem that produces the river's color. There are private farms with pools near the park entrance where visitors can swim.

Yes, most visitors with average fitness can complete the trail. The path is well-maintained and marked with wooden steps in steep sections. Children from age 5 and up typically handle it well. Those with reduced mobility may find certain sections challenging.

Tenorio Volcano National Park is approximately 80 km from Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. The drive takes about 2 hours through scenic roads. MoonRiver Travel picks you up directly from your hotel in Guanacaste.

The park is rich with biodiversity. Common sightings include toucans, howler monkeys, coatis, river otters, sloths, and numerous frog species. Bird watchers frequently spot the Sunbittern and various tanager species along the trail.
